🇲🇽 How I Got My RFC in Mexico — And Why It’s Easier Than You Think

If you're an American living in Mexico, you've probably heard about the RFC — the Registro Federal de Contribuyentes. It’s Mexico’s version of a tax ID, and it’s required for everything from opening a bank account to signing a lease or buying property.

For years, I avoided it. I’ve lived in Mexico for 15 years as a permanent resident, raising kids and building a life. I never really needed an RFC — until I did.

👨‍👧‍👦 Why I Finally Got My RFC

Like many families, we hit a point where we needed extra income. Raising kids isn’t cheap, and I decided to apply for a job at Teleperformance, working on the Booking.com campaign. As part of the hiring process, they asked for my RFC — along with a few other documents.

I panicked a little. I’d always assumed the RFC process was complicated, time-consuming, and full of red tape. But now I had no choice. I had to figure it out.

And here’s the surprise: it was easy.

✅ What I Did — Step by Step

  1. Booked an Appointment Online: The SAT website lets you schedule an appointment. In Monterrey, there are plenty of agents, so I didn’t have to wait long.

  2. Brought the Right Documents: I showed up with my passport, proof of address (like a utility bill), and my residency card. That’s all they needed.

  3. Spoke Clearly and Confidently: The staff were professional and helpful. I didn’t need perfect Spanish — just a little preparation and patience.

  4. Walked Out With My RFC: In less than an hour, I had it. No drama. No confusion. Just done.

💡 Why This Matters

Getting your RFC opens doors. It’s not just about taxes — it’s about being able to fully participate in life here. Whether you’re starting a business, buying a car, or just trying to get internet installed, your RFC is key.

🤔 If You’re Unsure, Reach Out

I’m not offering a service, but I’ve been through the process and I know how confusing it can seem from the outside. If you’re an expat in Mexico and have questions about getting your RFC, feel free to reach out. I’ll do my best to point you in the right direction or share what worked for me.

Sometimes, all it takes is a little clarity to move forward.
