The 8 Things I Wish My Customers Knew Before Packing Their First Box

In the moving industry, I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen moves that went off like clockwork, and I’ve seen moves that felt like a chaotic scene from a disaster movie.

The biggest difference? The preparation.

Most people spend their time worrying about how to tape a box or which moving company to call. But the real "make or break" moments happen before the movers even arrive. If you’re getting ready to move, here are the eight things I wish every customer understood before they touched a single roll of packing tape.

1. The "Essentials Suitcase" Rule

Imagine you are flying across the world for a week. You wouldn’t put your passport, chargers, medication, or toothbrush in a random box marked "Kitchen Misc," right? Treat your move exactly the same way. Pack a suitcase for every person in the house with enough clothes, toiletries, and tech to survive 48 hours without touching a single cardboard box.

2. Don’t Label by Room—Label by Priority

"Kitchen" or "Living Room" are vague labels that don't tell you anything when you’re staring at 50 identical boxes. Instead, start labeling with Priority Numbers:

  • Priority 1: Immediate Needs (Bedding, shower curtain, coffee maker, kid's toys).

  • Priority 2: Functional (Clothes, bathroom items).

  • Priority 3: "I can live without this for a month" (Books, seasonal decor, spare linens).

3. Your Documents Are Not Your Furniture

I’ve seen it happen too many times: a customer packs birth certificates, leases, or passports in a box that gets buried in the back of a storage unit. Keep your "Paperwork Portfolio" with you in your car. Never pack essential legal documents in the moving truck. It’s a headache you don’t need.

4. The "Weight Matters" Golden Rule

Use small boxes for heavy items (books, tools, canned goods) and large boxes for light items (pillows, blankets, towels). If you have a massive box filled with books, you’ll either break the box, break the mover's back, or - worse - both.

5. Clear the Path, Literally

The biggest delay in any move is friction. If you have narrow hallways filled with loose shoes, pet toys, or stray rugs, we spend more time dodging obstacles than moving your life. Spend the hour before the movers arrive doing a "clearance sweep." A wide, safe path can shave hours off your moving day.

6. The "Photo Hack" for Electronics

Before you unplug a single wire behind your TV or gaming console, take a photo of the back of it. When you’re exhausted at your new place and trying to figure out which cable goes into which port, you’ll be glad you have a map.

7. The "Open First" Box (The Secret Weapon)

Pack a specific box for the moment you arrive:

  • A roll of toilet paper (do not learn this the hard way!)

  • Hand soap and a hand towel.

  • Paper plates and plastic utensils.

  • A universal tool kit (screwdriver, box cutter, and pliers).

  • Extra lightbulbs.

8. Use Your Clothes as "Cushioning"

Stop buying expensive bubble wrap for your glassware and trinkets. Use your soft goods! Wrap plates in t-shirts, use socks to protect glasses, and tuck towels between heavy items. You’re already moving these items, so let your laundry protect your fragile stuff for free.

The Bottom Line

Moving isn't just about moving "stuff"- it’s about moving your rhythm. By focusing on these eight details, you’re not just saving time; you’re saving your sanity.
