DIY Moving: Protecting Your Home Office Furniture Using Household Blankets and Shrink Wrap

Updated: Mar 6, 2019

Whether you are getting ready for a DIY move or preparing your stuff for a self-service move, here are a few useful tips on how to prepare your home office for a move using a few things you probably have laying around + some shrink wrap from your local hardware store or truck rental company.

Home Office Furniture

First, remove the drawers and clear everything from your desk & credenza. Never move furniture with things still inside: safety first. Moving is not a test of strength.

Secondly, throw a blanket over the desk or credenza. Again, center the blanket so it hangs evenly over the sides. This will help you get even slack on both sides, which you will need for the next step.

Next, fold the end of the blanket together and get a nice firm grip of the flaps. Tape the flaps together to hold the blanket in place. Stop and take a social media picture to show how awesome your are. Hashtag #MovingHelpCenter #MovingDay

Lastly, grab your trusty shrink wrap and start at the top corner. Add a 3+ rounds of shrink wrap, nice and tight. Give the shrink wrap a nice "bow-tie" twist every few rounds. Nothing adds a touch elegance like a nice bow-tie.

Dressers & more

Protecting your dresser, and anything else, is the same as the desk & credenza. Follow the same steps and your bedroom furniture will be safe & ready for your moving helpers to load everything for you on moving day. With everything wrapped & ready to go, your move will go a lot faster - not to mention safer. You do not necessarily need another person to help you shrink wrap furniture. Masking tape and creativity with the shrink wrap is sufficient enough moving help.
